Adaptation.
My favorite books adapted for film for all of the cozy feels.
As much as I absolutely loved the zine we made this summer, I’m putting the next one on hold while we try to get a functional bookstore website launched and the wine going (that site is functioning like a dream — she’s so good looking!!) and all of the other fun little projects that I have in store.
One of my favorite parts was putting together the Summer Watchlist with the terrific books that have been adapted for terrific films. In the zine, I picked movies (and a show) that felt summery, saving an entire list for what I hoped would be the fall/winter issue.
Since the printed zine won’t be happening this year, here are the adaptations I saved for all of the cozy season feels!!
A forever favorite and possibly one of the best adaptations of all time. I think about Kristen Scott Thomas’s entire wardrobe constantly. The love, the heartache, baby Juliette Binoche. All of it.
I am a woman of a certain age, so the only acceptable Laurie is Christian Bale. Chalamet is cute and all, but, who are we kidding. The tension between Winona and Christian! Cut it with a knife.
One of my all-time favorite movies!! Based on the Chabon novel, you get Michael Douglas as a creative writing teacher who hasn’t published anything new in ages, Robert Downey Jr. at his greatest, Katie Holmes and her red cowboy boots, Frances McDormand as the school Chancellor and the troubled Tobey Maguire getting high and being delightful.
Another absolute favorite. God, this movie. The costumes. The setting. The hands (IYKYK). Kiefer Sutherland steals every scene. The incredible Brenda Blythen as Mrs. Bennett. Jane’s lovely face. Gah, the best.
The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Did we all know this was based on a book? I didn’t until recently! Meryl Streep being iconic. And I’m a sucker for that classic trope — remove the glasses, brush the hair, update the clothes and suddenly the girl’s a stunner.
Great Expectations (1998)
The whole movie, but really, it’s about that water fountain kiss, that Donna Karen outfit in the perfect shade of green and the incredible Anne Bancroft as Ms Dinsmoor. Chica boom.
One of the best adaptations, this series is a stunner. Four generations of a Korean family over an unknown (to me) slice of history. Everyone is gorgeous. The story is sweeping. I waited impatiently for the new episode every week.
The First Wives Club
Bette Midler. Goldie Hawn. And, of course, the great Diane Keaton. ‘You Don’t Own Me’ plays in my head on the regular. Fluffy, fun and just ridiculous enough.
Inconceivable! One of my favorite movies as a youngster and, I’m thrilled to say, a top film for my own kids (Nell seriously considered going as Princess Buttercup for Halloween, but T. Swift won out). Baby Robin Wright is the most beautiful creature.
Andrew and I spent our honeymoon in a little seaside cottage in Sicily for our honeymoon. He taught me how to drive a stick shift in the dirt driveway while sheep ambled by, like a scene straight out of The Godfather. Also, Diane Keaton stealing the show.
Too soon to send my husband a gentle hint about my Christmas wishlist?? This ring is at the top of the list.
Decidedly less romantic, but I have been dreaming of the Mill food recycler ever since hearing Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s ads for it on her podcast so maybe this is the thing that’s truly at the top of my Xmas wishlist. Sounds like the answer to all of my composting prayers (and will eliminate the big hulking green bin we have out back that I forget to turn over).
How is this magnificent artichoke pillow from the new John Derian x Target collab already sold out?!? I’m pining for it, big time. Also eyeing this cutie mushroom lamp, on sale soon.
This accordion wall sconce from Zara Home!! Exactly what I’ve been looking for (plug in!) to tuck inside my daughter’s canopied bed. Also eyeing these Oeuf knock-off shelves for art supplies. And a handsome red toolbox for a handsome husband this holiday season??
Stocking up on my favorite Clinique Black Honey-dupe and the best eyelash serum (I also use it on my brows) during the Credo Friends & Family Sale!
A little 💚 below means so much to me!!
Hope you’re reading something good.

Excellent choices! I’m going to try to visit in November 🧡🧡
